Untitled Xiles Story By: Nikita In the darkness of her apartment Scully's phone continued to ring. She stared at it through her tears. She didn't want to talk to anyone, especially about this. Losing Mulder was hard enough but to talk about it... to talk about it would force the reality on her and she wasn't ready to face that yet. Why did I tell him? The last thing I ever said to my best friend was that it was because of him I am dying. I pushed him over the edge. I'm responsible for his suicide. Her nose began to bleed, a result of the pressure brought about by her crying. Yet it no longer bothered her. The only thing she had worth living for was gone. It was time to face her destiny alone. She sighed as the phone finally stopped ringing. The tears flowed; the sobs choked. It was over. What the government had failed to do time and time again Mulder managed to due with a single bullet to the head... end their partnership... their friendship. She looked up. "Why did you do this to me? When I needed you most you leave. You selfish bastard. After everything I've sacrificed for you did you ever once think of me? Dammit, Mulder, I loved you and now you'll never know." An abrupt knock at the door startled Scully. Wiping her eyes, she got up from the couch and peered out to see who was there. "Dana?" Her mom's voice caught on held-back tears. Scully unlocked the door and fell into her mom's arms releasing all her locked up emotions. Maggie closed the door behind her as she led Scully back to the couch joining her in their mutual grief. "I'm so sorry, Dana." "Mom, what am I going to do?" she cried into Maggie's arms. "I don't want to face anything without him." "I loved him too." Scully looked at her mom. "I considered him family from the moment we met after your abduction," Maggie continued. Scully closed her eyes. "I never told him." Maggie reached out to her daughter gently stroking her hair. "He knew. And he loved you too, don't ever doubt that." "Why did he do it? He was never one to give up without a fight. Why did he have to leave me now?" "I don't know," Maggie said. "I wish I did, but I don't." Scully walked over to the window as Maggie sat and watched her daughter's heart shatter. "Dana, you shouldn't be alone tonight. Why don't you come home with me." Continuing to stare out the window, Scully responded, "I need to be alone tonight." Maggie walked over to Scully and touched her arm. "I'm worried about you." Scully turned to face her mom. "I'm not going to do anything irrational. I just... I just need to deal with this in my own way." Maggie studied Scully's eyes and nodded. Her little girl was strong and strong-willed. "Alright. But don't hesitate to call me no matter what time of the night." "I won't," Scully said as she hugged her mom. "Thank you." Maggie broke away and walked toward the door to leave. "Mom." Maggie stopped and looked back. "I love you." With a smile and glistening eyes, Maggie answered, "I love you too, Dana." She watched as the door gently closed then turned back to the vastness of the night sky. Clasping her hands together she took a deep breath and looked up to the stars. "I don't know where to begin, God, but somehow I know you're listening. You are well aware of my wavering faith in you, but right now I have nowhere else to turn." That's a real nice thing to say, she thought. "I don't understand why the last four years have happened but they have been wonderful in spite of the pain. I can't face this alone and I have no one to turn to. That person was taken away from me" She paused. "Actually he deserted me. I probably have no right to ask this, but I need two favors. The first is I need your strength to get me through this. I know it won't be long till I meet you face to face but until then... The second, and most important to me, is please watch over Fox..." "Mulder" Her eyes widened as a familiar voice reached her ears. She whirled around and froze. "It's Mulder, not Fox," a weakened Mulder smiled. "I thought we already went through this before." Scully still had not moved. "Fo... Mul..." she mumbled. He walked toward her and she ran into his arms burying her tear-stained face in his chest. Mulder held her tightly as he felt his shirt become dampened by her tears. His own tears stung his eyes. After many anguished moments Scully looked up into his eyes. "You're dead. I saw your body myself." He ran his fingers through her silky hair. "It seems our government friend knows more than we thought. The only way we're going to find the answers is to have them believe I'm dead. I couldn't let you know with your life in danger." Mulder drilled his gaze into hers. "Why didn't you tell me you only have a month left to live?" Her eyes filled with regret and she walked away. "How did you find out?" "Your brother, Bill, paid me a visit before the suicide." He walked over to her. "Why couldn't you tell me?" She looked up at him with those blue eyes that absorbed him. "I don't want anyone's sympathy. You have your life and..." Her tears cut her off. Gently he lifted her chin with a finger. "And you are a big part of my life. I never would've left if I had know." "That's just it. I don't want you to put your life on hold for me. We both know how it's gonna end." "There is a cure for you and we'll find it." Her chin quivered. "Mulder, it's too late for that now." He pulled her to him once again. "I will never accept that. None of this matters without you. They've taken away so much from me... from us, I will not allow them to take you again." He broke down and they both slid to the floor in each others arms. "I don't care about aliens. I don't care about cover-ups," he cried. "I don't even care about the truth anymore. I only care about you, Dana. I will find the cure for you and I don't care what I have to do to get it." Scully looked into Mulder's eyes and gently touched his cheek. "You don't mean that." "I have never meant anything more." "Fox, you can't give up everything you have worked your whole life for." "I never had you in my life before." "You can't just stop caring. What about Samantha?" "What about her?" he asked as he smoothed her hair. "Everything's been one huge lie. I'm not even sure who my real father is anymore." "Oh, Fox. I wish we had more time. I don't want to leave you." "You won't. The cure is out there." He touched her lips with a finger. "I'm not going to face the rest of my life without you." Hazel met blue with an intensity neither had ever known. "I love you, Dana." Her chin quivered. Why now? Why did he have to offer his love to her after she had finally accepted her impending death? She continued to stare at him. Mulder gently pushed some whisps of her auburn hair away from her face. She closed her eyes in response. When she re-opened them his gaze was still locked into her own. Fear consumed her heart but the words poured out. "I love you, too, Fox." "Why have we fought it for so long?" His voice was hushed. "It was never the right time." "But somehow we always knew we'd be together didn't we?" Scully nodded. Her heart pounded. They both knew she'd be leaving soon. Mulder tightened his hold on her. "I don't ever want to let you go. Can we just stay here like this forever?" She snuggled in closer to him, melting in his arms as they leaned back again the couch. "Mmmm, that would be nice." She smiled. "However there would be certain calls of nature that would require us to move." "What about if we dug a hole in the floor?" Mulder laughed. "Yea, my neighbors would love that." Mulder shifted and swept her into his arms as he stood up. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he did so. "Mulder, what are you doing?" "Well, we confessed our love for each other now there's something we need to do. Something I think we've both wanted to do for a long time," he smirked with his famous lop-sided grin. Scully's eyes widened. He had spoken the truth but was it the right time? Everything was happening so fast, yet there wasn't really much time to take things slow. Mulder knew exactly where Scully's mind was going and he really hadn't meant it to come out as it sounded. But he was not about to correct himself. Watching her blush was too much fun. He opened the front door. "Where are we going?" she asked. "Trust me." "What happened to 'trust no one'?" He looked into her eyes. Their noses touched briefly. "You can trust me." He opened the door to the stairwell and proceeded up to the roof still carrying her in his arms. Once on the roof he let her down but still kept his arms around her. She looked up at him with half-closed eyelids. "I thought I had you all figured out." "Are you disappointed?" "No," she smiled. "Not at all." He led her over to a white-washed bench and held her hands as they sat facing each other. A warm, gentle breeze swirled around them. "Agent Mulder, what are you up to?" He stood up again. "Come here," he said as he pulled her up. He led her to the ledge and stood behind her. "See that?" "What am I looking at?" "Everything. The world is ours tonight, Dana." A tears rolled down her cheek as she turned to face him. "Fox..." "I love you and I don't want to waste another minute. There's so much I want to share with you. To show you. To experience with you. I want to see the world through your eyes." Her watery eyes locked onto his. "I know. I feel the same. Eveything I've experienced in the last four years you were the one I wanted to call and share it with." Mulder wiped away her tears. His touch sparking an electricity so charged it touched both of them. He leaned in closer to her. "Are you sure about this?" "I love you," she said as she reached up and pulled him closer to her. "If I wasn't sure I wouldn't still be here." He lightly touched her lips with his then pulled back slightly. Her breath was warm; her velvet lips inviting. He teased her with his closeness. Tenativly his lips touched hers again. She had longed to feel the softness of his lips on hers for so long. Her dreams were wonderful and often real but never real enough. Chills ran down her spine as his lips touched hers. Her body cried when the warmth was removed. His heavy breath tickled her nose. Her lips instinctivly parted in anticipation of his next touch. The next kiss became deeper, more meaningful, more hungered. Years of denied and hidden feelings came flooding to the surface. Mulder became light-headed from the rush of emotion but refused to release his love. He had waited and pined-away far too long for Scully. He had her now and only death would seperate them. Only death, he thought sadly. How soon till I have to face that? Her skin tingled; her body shivered. A dying wish, she thought. She smiled into the kiss. An experience well worth the wait. "What's so funny?" Mulder asked into her mouth. She looked at him with a huge grin. "I'm just so happy." He kissed her again. "Yea?" "Mm-hm," she murmered as she returned his kiss. Mulder looked at her. "Any particular reason for this happiness?" "Fox," she paused. "If I had known it would be like this..." "I would've kissed you a long time ago," he finished with his own feelings. "Are we being impulsive?" "I don't think so but so what if we are. I love you and you love me. What could be wrong about that" "Absolutly nothing," she stated as she stood on her tip-toes to reach his lips. He picked her up, remaining lost in their love, and took her back to her apartment. Placing her on the couch, he sat beside her and they took a break by smothering each other with light kisses. The phone rang and they stopped to listen as the answering machine picked it up. "Scully, it's Skinner." His voice was full of sadness. "I was calling to see how you're doing. Feel free to call anytime." Scully looked at Mulder. Reality clouded her once love-filled eyes. "We still have a very serious situation to face." Mulder gently pushed her back on the couch. "Yes we do. But that can all wait. There's something much more important happening here." He kissed her hungrily once more. The tension left her body as she succumbed to his advances. The world could wait. They had both sacrificed everything for the cause now it was their turn to receive something. Something in the form of an unbreakable love. An unbreakable love that would remain through everything...even death if it were ever to come to that. But death is never truly near for endless love conquers all and possesses answers to seemingly impossible questions. No fate is cruel enough to bring tormented soulmates together only to separate them weeks later. When such a rare love is shared it provides a long life for both recipients. To waste a love like Fox and Dana shared would be foolish of fate and fate is never a fool.
